What to plant under Walnut Trees that is not toxic to animals #923912

Asked January 25, 2026, 3:26 PM EST

As always, thank you all so much for being there for us in Oregon, you are the BEST!! Question: What shrubs, flowers, fauna, can I grow under a walnut tree that are not toxic to dogs, cats and toddlers if ingested or touched? I have done a lot of research, over and over again, and just when I think I find "the" plant, upon further research I find that it is toxic, or invasive. I am getting so frustrated that I am starting to feel I need to cut down the tree. However, it is one of two(a blue spruce) that are growing in my backyard, the only shade provided in yard. Any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Thanks for reaching out.
Here is a sortable list from the ASPCA. You can look for non-toxic plants (dogs & cats).

Have you considered using containers instead of planting into the ground? This would give you more options that aren't susceptible to the allelopathic effects of black walnut trees. There are some plant lists in the side bar of this article from the Morton Arboretum that might be of interest.

Fencing may be the best option to keep a busy toddler at bay. At least until they are older and can learn from you what is a safe plant and what needs to be left untouched.

I hope this helps give you a little start in the right direction!
