Exposed tree roots #923904

Asked January 24, 2026, 5:33 PM EST

We have a tree with a large 2 to 4 inch) exposed root. I believe it is a type of ash. It is a volunteer. 4 of them blew in from somewhere. We kept 2 of them. They grew fast and are as tall as the house. There is no vegetation in the ground near by but does get water in summer as there are large pots under the tree. We are in Terrebonne which is north of Bend. I am not sure what to do about it. It is in a high traffic area. I’ve been told just to cut it out and the tree would be fine. I’ve also been told to cover it with dirt or to cover it with large mulch. What are your thoughts.

Expert Response

Hi Cindy:

Do not cut the root out, as it could affect the health of the tree. Covering with top soil or mulch is your best option.  I'm going to attach an article with additional information you may find helpful.
