St Mary’s conservation yardscape #923825

Asked January 21, 2026, 1:01 PM EST

Good afternoon, I’m looking for some info if we have any programs to help with native landscaping on my property? I know some counties have grants or other programs. Does st Mary’s have anything or could Maryland ones help me in my yard?

Expert Response

We recommend you check with your county Extension office, as HGIC isn't able to maintain a county-level database of local programs, grants, etc. Your St. Mary's Master Gardeners might also be aware of local resources. We have an ever-growing number of web pages about native plants and gardening for wildlife, if helpful. You can explore both the linked resource and information available on the Maryland Native Plants Program web page. (For example, they have a newly-published guide to native plants for central Maryland which also largely overlaps with species that grow in southern MD.)

If you are interested in hiring design, installation, or maintenance help, consider a Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional, as program graduates are trained in sustainable landscaping techniques, which includes using native species.

Thank you, I am actually a cblp, just recently moved to st Mary’s and I thought I was emailing my local extension office my bad lol. I have a lot of wisteria and English ivy to clear from my property and I’m looking for financial assistance through my design process. I’ve reached out to my local extension office thank you.

You're welcome! We realize it can be a bit confusing...Maryland questions sent in to Ask Extension are answered by the University's HGIC team, which serves the whole state. However, county Extension offices also help the local community with horticulture questions (and a variety of other topics), though comparatively few of those off-campus personnel are on this AE platform. (Other Universities may structure their use of AE differently, being more county-based in terms of who is responding to questions.) When HGIC doesn't have the information requested, we try to connect folks to the UMD people who can help.
