Protection of County Parks in Early Transmission Line Route Planning #923776

Asked January 20, 2026, 3:57 AM EST

Dear MSU extension - to whom it may concern, I am writing as a MSU Alum and county resident regarding the early planning stages of a proposed 345 kV transmission line for which multiple route options are currently being evaluated. Some of the routes presented to the public appear to cross or border Ingham county parks and recreational land. Because this project is still in its early screening phase, I wanted to respectfully ask if extension could help bring awareness and foster engagement before any routes are narrowed or advanced. County parks represent long-term public investments in recreation, environmental protection, and community well-being. Routing high-voltage transmission infrastructure through parkland—particularly when alternative routes may exist along highways or agricultural areas—raises concerns about permanent loss of recreational value, tree canopy, habitat continuity, and future land-use restrictions. I respectfully request that this notice be directed to the appropriate staff within MSU extension to help garner awareness about the following asks to local park officials or anyone who works adjacent to park officials. Advocate for avoidance of parkland as a priority during early route screening Require clear justification if any route affecting parks remains under consideration Coordinate with township and county leadership before any alignment involving park property advances further Early involvement by park stewards can prevent irreversible impacts and help ensure that public land is protected for future generations. Thank you for your time, stewardship, and service to our beautiful communities. https://www.mifuturegrid.com/oneida-sabine-lake/maps/

Expert Response

We certainly acknowledge the value of green spaces in communities. MSU Extension is unable to be involved with  advocacy issues.  I would recommend reaching out directly to Ingham County Parks Department<personal data hidden> or <personal data hidden>) to discuss any concerns you may have about the project.
If there is any information you would like to share with Extension staff directly, please contact the local Ingham County Extension offices.
