Creeping Charlie #923774

Asked January 19, 2026, 9:10 PM EST

I just this fall realized that creeping Charlie is a non native invasive plant that has been truly thriving in my spray free lawn. I would like to add new native garden beds to my property this year but am really struggling to figure out if I need to treat & how to treat the creeping Charlie before planting. I have multiple large patches of it so hand pulling is not an option. How bad is this plant? How important is it to treat? Thanks for the advice!

Are you willing to use a herbicide?  This plant is very prolific and will spread if left unmanaged.

I would be willing to hire someone to apply herbicide if this is an invasive plant that would really necessitate that level of mediation. I’m struggling to figure out what plants that are not native are okay to leave, like plantago lanceolata for example. But it does seem that without any intervention the grass level of my lawn will be exclusively creeping Charlie. Will that inhibit the growth of taller natives at all or just be a nonnative ground cover of little consequence?

Thank you for taking the time to help me figure out the best plan!
