Will a clumping bamboo survive in Minnesota? #923743

Asked January 18, 2026, 12:13 PM EST

I’m researching fargesia murielae and would love to plant it as a natural hedge in my yard. Does the arb have clumping bamboo? Thanks jane

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

I don’t know if the Arb has clumping bamboo. Clumping bamboo is more reliably hardy in zone 5 and higher. MN winters overall have been milder for the last 4 decades but we can always have some bitterly cold days. The hot droughty summers may also be a problem for it. It prefers constant moisture. It will probably do ok, it may not reach its full potential.
