Cut back salvias? #923728

Asked January 17, 2026, 4:54 PM EST

My salvias usually die back in the winter, and that's always been my signal to prune them back so they'll flower again in the summer. Doing that always produces prolific blooms in the summer. However, because of the warm weather this winter, they haven't died back at all. Do I they need to prune them back so that they'll flower again, or isn't that necessary? Thanks for your help.

Thank you for your question.  OSU has no pruning advice specific to salvia, but this UCal guide can be used here:  https://arboretum.ucdavis.edu/news/sage-advice

This OSU sheet provides more information on pruning,  generally:  https://extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/extd8/files/documents/12281/pruningtreesshrubs.pdf

Hope this helps.  Good luck!
