Expert Response

Hello Hubert,

Thank you for reaching out to the EMG helpline to ask about your amaryllis! Here are a few steps you can take as the blooms fade. First, cut off the flowers before they start to produce seeds. This will help keep energy in the plant. You can then wait for the flower stalk to turn yellow before cutting it off. It's best to place the plant in the sunniest location inside your home and you can water and fertilize like other house plants. After the change of frost has passed later this year, you can harden off the plant and keep it outdoors, if you would like to. Here are a few extension articles full of details about keeping these plants. Please feel to reach out if you have any other questions, we are just an email away!
