Transplanting #923697

Asked January 16, 2026, 1:48 PM EST

Hello, we're moving from Portland to Bend this month. I have 3 boxwoods, about 12" high, and a small sword fern I've become attached to. The Portland extension service has helped me figure out how to do the transplant, but they feel Bend may be very dry for these plants. What would you advise? Will it be too difficult for these plants to grow in central Oregon? Please let me know when you can. We plan to move around the 23rd. Thank you in advance for your time.

Hi Ann,
Welcome to Bend!

There are many climate factors that affect when to transplant here in Central Oregon. The following OSU Extension publication provides information that you may find helpful about gardening in Central Oregon’s climate:

“There are numerous factors that contribute to whether or not a plant will survive besides minimum temperatures. Some of these factors include soil type, rainfall, heat tolerance and exposure to wind and sun. According to the USDA Hardiness Zone map, Central Oregon is placed in Zone 6 (–10 degrees Fahrenheit to 0 degrees Fahrenheit). However, this is really oversimplified given our many microclimates. The following chart is a more accurate guide to use when looking at plant hardiness for Central Oregon. Just remember to think about microclimates within your own landscape.”

When selecting plant material for your landscape, the chart indicates that the USDA hardiness zone for Bend is 3-5. Gardening in Central Oregon's climate | OSU Extension Service (oregonstate.edu)

Regarding your specific location and plants, I recommend you call the Deschutes County OSU Extension office in Redmond at<personal data hidden>. Ask to speak with Amy Jo Detweiler (oregonstate.edu). Amy Jo is our Community Horticulturist. She welcomes your garden questions and is a great resource.
