Rose pruning his Winter #923673

Asked January 15, 2026, 2:52 PM EST

So far a mild winter with rose buds growing in January. When to prune roses?

Multnomah County Oregon

Expert Response

Wait on rose pruning, as cold snaps are likely yet this winter. We’ve had some serious freezes in January and February and if you prune now, you may have to re-prune if there’s damage later. Roses have a lot of energy in their root systems and will be able to push new growth in March, even if you prune off some leaves and new growth. Here’s a published article about it, with link to the full rose pruning publication from OSU.
Thank you for the advice.  I will hold off pruning and any concern over it.
