Dear Amy:

Thanks for contacting the UVM Extension Master Gardener Helpline for help pruning your two old apple trees. March is a good time to prune apple trees in Vermont because the trees will be less likely to suffer from winter injury. We attach a link to a fact sheet that discusses late winter pruning.

The Extension Service does not have arborists who can come to your home to prune trees. However, you can find a certified arborist at the website "treesaaregood.org" (link attached below). The website is managed by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), which is "a professional green industry organization whose mission is to promote the professional practice of arboriculture." ISA certifies arborists, providing a source for recognizing skilled tree care professionals.

We hope that this information is helpful.
