Farm plan & design #923627

Asked January 14, 2026, 3:18 PM EST

I was referred to MSU extension by the FSA for any assistance or resources to assist us in planning and designing a farm growing organic produce and cut flowers in fields as well as hydroponically in greenhouses. We also plan to raise organic chickens, ducks, quail and rabbits with small ruminants and mini cows as attractions for extended agribusiness activities and on site sales of value added products. As new farmers, we want to ensure the best utilization of farm resources including land allocation, livestock and agricultural rotation and work flow.

Hello,

First I would like to point you to our new Beginning Farmer Resource and Decision making guide: https://www.canr.msu.edu/resources/beginning-farmer-resource-and-decision-making-guide

It talks about planning a new venture and some of the topics that you have listed. We have a specialty cut flower farm tour each summer and that would be an excellent learning opportunity. There are online hydroponics courses: https://workspace.oregonstate.edu/course/intro-to-hydroponics

These resources will be a good starting point for you as you think about getting started.

Thanks,
