Apple tree trimming #923608

Asked January 14, 2026, 9:47 AM EST

Xcel energy said my tree is too close to the power line and they will trim it. I think they might just cut off a few feet from the top. No idea when they will do it. What if they don’t do it before it warms up? Is mid March too late? See photo

Thank you for writing.
Xcel will do it free but they are interested in their lines. They will clear the lines but not address other issues in the tree such as unstable joints that do not endanger the lines or waterspouts etc. This tree appears to have been pruned for the lines several times and one joint (at least) looks stressed.

I suggest an arborist trim the tree if possible. Consultations are free and this is the low season, cheapest. The tree should be pruned in Feb March. My signature tells how to locate arborists.
