Clematis budding in January #923466

Asked January 09, 2026, 12:07 PM EST

My clematis started budding during the warm days we had in Eugene in late December. Will this damage any future flowering? Should I cut it all back?

Expert Response

Yes, this is happening to many of our perennial vines and shrubs. It can also affect blooming next year of fruits. Unfortunately, trimming does not help. You may see some dieback next year, but that can be pruned as it occurs.
We seem to be in a more challenging time with climate change changing the garden rules.
