Starting a community garden #923465

Asked January 09, 2026, 11:21 AM EST

Hi, I work at a college campus, and we are looking to start a community garden from an existing garden on campus. I would love to meet with someone knowledgeable about gardening and community gardens to discuss this project. I'm looking for any tips or resources to help. Please get back to me at your convenience at my email listed below. Thank you!

Hello Beth,

Thanks for reaching out to the UNH Extension Yard and Garden Infoline. It's exciting that you're on the journey to build a community garden! There is certainly a lot that goes into it so reaching out for help is a wise choice.

The first place I would point you is to a guide to building community gardens that UNH Extension developed a few years ago called "From the Ground Up". It has a lot of great information. You can find it here-

https://extension.unh.edu/sites/default/files/migrated_unmanaged_files/Resource002173_Rep3203.pdf

Here is another resource from the University of Minnesota Extension about how to start a community garden-

https://ccaps.umn.edu/story/7-effective-steps-start-community-garden

After looking through those, I'm happy set up a time to chat about your project and I can try to answer any questions that you have about the process. I can also try to put you in touch with someone who has built a community garden before, if that would be helpful as well.

I hope this helps and please ask if you have further questions!
