That's a good question--it's always advisable to consider the potential ramifications of pesticide use.
For Tree-age, like any pesticide, environmental hazards are listed on the label. In the case of mammals like squirrels, the label indicates no danger, even while listing toxicity to mammals.
This circle can be squared, as it were, by considering the mode of application and the potential exposure to squirrels. In short, by the time the pesticide is distributed in the tree, the concentration is pretty low, low enough that a squirrel or other mammal would have to eat and unrealistically large amount of plant tissue to receive a harmful dose of the chemical. Yes, the pesticide can harm squirrels and other mammals (i.e. the chemical itself is indeed dangerous), but when used according to the label instructions, it is not likely to cause harm (squirrels are not likely to be exposed to the chemical in a high enough amount to be harmful).
