Dying Douglas Fir Trees in Oregon City #923313

Asked January 05, 2026, 12:06 AM EST

Hi there I was wondering if you had any recommendations for people up in Oregon City who could assess the health of our trees. 10 years ago we had a 50 foot section just break off and fall. This morning, a 130 foot tree was pushed down by the wind and the rootball looks suspicious for black stain root disease. I'm worried that our arborist is just going to want to clean it up and move on, but we have other Doug Firs within striking distance of the home and I'm nervous. I see one of them that is suspicious for flat head boring beetle too as it's weeping. I'm happy to pay for the assessment - I just don't know where to turn.

Expert Response

From your photos, I can see that the root system of the fallen tree had some rot issues. Closer examination of these roots should be able to determine the specific type of disease/decay, which could then inform further assessment of the threat to other trees. I can take a look and provide some assistance. I have your phone number from your call to the Clackamas Extension office, so I will contact you directly for further consultation.
