Removing a canker from a peach tree #923302

Asked January 04, 2026, 5:59 PM EST

I can use some guidance on removing this canker since it is so close to the crotch of the tree.

Montgomery County Maryland

Expert Response

Hi-  the cankered area is too large to remove without further injuring the tree and possibly encouraging new infections.

It appears that the tree has produced callous tissue to compartmentalize the injury. Allow this natural process to proceed. Peach trees are short-lived in Maryland due to climate, insect pests, and diseases. Consider removing the tree if it is steadily declining.
