Ohio Deer Research #923271

Asked January 02, 2026, 5:54 PM EST

Hello, I am a local deer hunter looking for scientific literature about deer movement patterns in Ohio or similar climates. I'm hoping to better understand deer home range, deer density in huntable areas, daily movement distances and times, as well as the impact of hunter pressure throughout the season on the above. Interested in both sexes but people tend to make more noise about bucks, whereas I'd also like to understand does as well. I'm aware of PSU's "Deer Forest Study."

Greetings,

Your best bet, based on the online review that I did is to contact the ODNR Division of Wildlife for Ohio information.  They are the ones that track deer information in the state of Ohio. You may want to try online searches adding the word Extension to your search terms as that will bring up research and fact based information.  I did not find much done by Ohio State University, at least not recently.  I did find this from OSU that is more than a few years old:  https://ess.osu.edu/sites/essl/files/imce/Deer%20in%20Ohio%20Report_final.pdf

Good luck,

Tim
