Buckthorn #923190

Asked December 30, 2025, 7:23 AM EST

I have been cutting out my huge buckthorn infestation. The last 2 weeks. I am Wondering if I can apply Triclipyr yet this winter and if so does it need to be same day I cut the brush or any time within a few weeks? Thank you for your assistance

Thank you for your question for Extension Master Gardners. I'm happy to hear you are tackling a tough job in getting rid of your buckthorn. Once successful, you will be happy with the results. As you may know, triclopyr is an oil-based product, and can be applied in the winter, although fall is most desirable. I would also apply it as soon as you cut the brush for best results. The most important thing is that you read the directions on your triclopyr carefully to see what temperature is effective for the chemical and for other application information.
