Identify insect pest growing on Salix sitchensis in Marion County OR #923082

Asked December 25, 2025, 9:53 PM EST

I'm a willow grower living in Marion County. After leaf drop this year I found some swollen areas on the main stem with apparent punctured bark where an insect has gotten into the woody center. I grow many other species for basketry willow and don't want an unwanted pest infestation so would like this identified with recommendations for organic treatment, if possible. I could send a sample if needed and will attach some photos.

Expert Response

Dear Carol,

Thanks for contacting us about pests affecting Salix spp. I suggest that you bring samples of the affected wood (and the pest, if possible) to the Marion County Extension Office to be sent to the entomology lab at OSU. The Gardening Help Desk is generally open from 9am to 1pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. If you cannot come at those times, the receptionist may be able to accept your samples.

The office is located in the Farm Bureau Building at 1320 Capitol St. NE, Salem. I hope this is helpful.
