Peach Tree Advice #923076

I have a peach tree that is several years old. This past spring, the tree had an enormous amount of buds (hundreds, for sure), so I was expecting a huge harvest. After I returned from a short trip, I noticed that the tree was nearly stripped of all of its buds. Only a few buds remained, and we ended up with ONE peach. It appeared that something may have nibbled off a few young branches; although we have squirrels in the yard, we did not see them. What may have attacked our tree, and how can I prevent this from happening in the future? I apologize, I have no pictures. Your advice is very much appreciated. Thank you!

Squirrels and birds will eat tree buds and young fruit, even twigs. Deer too, if you have those. There are possible insect pests, but to have buds disappear at once makes it seem more likely to be an animal culprit. Were leaf buds also removed? Here is our home orchard disease and insect control guide. The insect section describes damage those cause. Peaches are difficult to grow here in the valley, and this guide includes leaf diseases common because of our cool wet weather. Everything about controlling animals is barriers (netting or cages) or repellents. Repellents need to be reapplied regularly. Bird-safe netting guidelines are here. This isn’t a direct answer to your question, but I hope it helps you troubleshoot this spring.
