Suggestions for Indoor Plants #923029

Asked December 21, 2025, 11:18 PM EST

I live in Oakland County and I would like to purchase a few varieties of indoor plants that would do well in my basement. The plants would have minimal access to natural light. Could you please provide some recommendations?

Expert Response

Thank you for contacting Ask Extension. There are few plants that can handle a minimal of light. They are the ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia), Pothos (Scindapsis), Snake Plant (Sansevieria), Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum), and Dracenea.

You will still need to provide artificial light for them if there is no natural light. Look for lights that are at least 5000K, full Spectrum growing lights. You can purchase LED ones that are a bit easier on your electric bill. They should be turned on for at minimum 6 hours. The best thing to do is let the plant tell you what it needs. If it begins to yellow and fade, then it will need more light. If you see crispy or brown edges, it will need less light. Most plants do well with about 8 hours of light/day.
