Harvesting plum scions #923010

Asked December 19, 2025, 9:32 PM EST

I am interested in harvesting some scions from a plum tree that seems to grow well in my microclimate. It grows on a shared road and seems to produce possibly Italian plums. Is it better to wait till January or February to take some scions from this tree or can I do it now? Thank you.

Hi Sarah and thanks for wanting to propagate your own plum tree. If the tree is dormant (no leaves left on it) you can take the scions now. We haven't had a freeze here yet, so it wouldn't hurt to wait a month either. Just be sure to keep them cool until it's time to graft them... some people even use the refrigerator!
