Is it necessary to change propagation water? #922869

Asked December 15, 2025, 10:35 AM EST

Hi there! I have a question that sparks a lot of debate. When propagating plants in water, is it necessary to change the water every week because of fears that the oxygen has depleted, OR does “topping up” propagation containers, that is just adding fresh water, whenever you see water levels drop, add enough oxygen back so the roots can be healthy? Thank you so much for your time in this matter! Cheers

Expert Response

Thank you for your question, Nadia.  One expert on this method of propagation advises:  "Many plants will also develop roots in a container of water, changed out with fresh water every 3 to 5 days." Here is the entire article, which is a bit more specific to the exact species being propagated:  https://extension.illinois.edu/news-releases/one-many-beginners-guide-plant-propagation

Good luck!
