Carpenter ants in apricot #922856
Asked December 14, 2025, 12:33 PM EST
This fall, carpenter ants were confirmed (by a pest management professional) nesting in our apricot tree. The ants have tunneled into the heart wood of the tree. What are our options? We would like to keep the tree, if possible. One large branch broke off in a heavy rain this past summer (which exposed the ant holes). There are now sticky spots along where another large branch meets the trunk. Kill the ants (in spring)? Brace the large branch? Do nothing? When the tree comes down, they will look for a new home. And, I'd like it not to be in my trees, home, or neighbor's home. I checked with an arborist and he said he would take a look in a week or two in early November. But, has yet to materialize or respond to the email i sent over a month later. Please help.

Frankly, it sounds as though your tree is on its last legs. Once branches start breaking off and heartwood is exposed and rotting, it probably is time to take it down before it falls on someone. Please read through our publication on Carpenter Ants, including control. You will need a pest company professional to treat the tree if you decide to keep it.
