Do comice pears require a pollinator? #922751

Asked December 08, 2025, 6:38 PM EST

I've checked several online sources, plus a local nursery. There seems to be no consensus on whether comice pears require a pollinator. We have a comice and plan to buy another pear tree. We like comice the best but if we need a pollinator of course we'll find one that flowers at the same time. Thank you Rebecca Thomson

Thanks for your question.

Here is some information from the Washington State Tree Fruit site that should be helpful - https://treefruit.wsu.edu/web-article/pear-pollination/

It notes that Comice may set large crops of parthenocarphic fruit (unfertilized).   However you can't depend on that happening every season.    Recommend that you plant one or more of the recommended pollinator varieties with overlapping bloom times  (like Bosc or Seckel) to facilitate better fruit yields.   They can all help pollinate each other.
