I have 20 acres of mostly 20 yr. old woodland in western Gallia Co., Greenfield Township. Can I grow White Pines on this property?

Gallia County Ohio

Expert Response

Mr. Matheney,
I received your question regarding planting White Pine in Gallia County.

After reviewing the soil types for Greenfield Township, I found that the area primarily consists of Rarden-Steinsburg soil types. This soil is characterized by moderately deep, steep slopes and is generally well-suited for trees, especially native hardwoods. The best sites for woodlands are typically on north and east-facing slopes.

However, our Extension State Forestry Specialist advised against planting White Pine in Southern Ohio due to health and mortality concerns. Depending on your desired outcome, there may be other species recommendations.

I recommend reaching out to your local service forester, Perry Brannan, for further guidance. He can be contacted at 360 East State Street, Athens, Ohio 45701. You can also reach him via email at <personal data hidden> or by phone at<personal data hidden>.
