Prince George's County Maryland

Expert Response

Non-climbing roses are typically trimmed around late February or into early or mid-March. If needed (if there is thorny growth hanging over a sidewalk, for example), minor pruning can be done now, then the rest can be trimmed in late winter. Shrub roses are generally cut down to about 15-21 inches off the ground, though there is no rule about the exact distance. Climbing roses are pruned differently (and less drastically) to avoid interruptions to the start of their flowering season.

When to prune hydrangea depends greatly on what species of hydrangea you have: bigleaf, panicle, oakleaf, or smooth. You can find guidance for each type on our Pruning Hydrangeas web page.
