Seeding Irrigated Pasture #922282

Asked November 21, 2025, 3:03 PM EST

Is the fall an acceptable time to seed my irrigated pasture? I have some bare and overgrazed parts of the pasture and wanted to broadcast the seed without tilling. Is this a good time of the year to do this? Or should I wait until spring?

Hello,
Yes, fall is a great time to re-seed, especially if you don't have irrigation. You need to seed early enough (Oct. 10th) for the seedlings to germinate and grow a bit prior to cold, wet winters. Frost can kill young, tender plants. That being said, annual ryegrass seed is cheap and germinates fast. It might get an early frost kill but it can be worth the risk. Throw handfulls of ARG seed on top of bare ground almost anytime of the year except mid winter and mid summer. Other wise wait until springtime to seed. Shelby
