Peace lily care #922140

Asked November 18, 2025, 8:04 PM EST

I have had a peace lily for several years, and it started off in a 4 inch pot. It is now quite large in a 10 inch pot, and I give it 3 cups of water every 5 days. Now it is difficult for me to tell if needs water without letting it droop significantly, and I try to avoid that. What can I do to make sure it’s watered consistently?

Peace lilies like moist but not overly-saturated soil.  When the top 1-2 inches of soil is dry, it's time to water your plant.  You can purchase a soil moisture meter to check the moisture level of the soil, or you can just use your finger to check the moisture level.

Here are some general watering guidelines.

Each time a plant is watered, the media should be thoroughly saturated to container capacity.

Thoroughly saturate means 10-15% of water applied flows out of drainage holes into saucer

- Container capacity means water to the point it can't hold anymore

During the winter when plants are at rest, water less frequently; the amount of water per watering is the same but cut the frequency by 1/4 to 1/2.

Common media moisture level terms:

- Wet = media should never dry out ~ bog and aquatic plants

- Moist = 1/4 to 1/3 of media allowed to dry between watering ~ ferns, mosses

- Somewhat moist = 1/3 to 1/2 of media allowed to dry between watering ~ most foliage plants fit this category

- Somewhat dry = 1/2 to 2/3 media allowed to dry between waterings ~ snake plants

- Dry = allow the entire plant to dry between waterings ~ certain succulents, desert cacti, agave
