Wrapping trees #921987

Asked November 15, 2025, 10:04 AM EST

when should we wrap our trees for winter? At what age should we stop wrapping a tree?

Douglas County Colorado

Expert Response

We recommend wrapping from (more or less) Hallowe'en to Tax Day (4/15).  Trees are typically safe to be unwrapped once they have developed deeply furrowed, mature bark.  Depending on the variety of tree you have, this could be a few years to a few decades; some smooth-barked trees (like serviceberries or alders, for example) with trunk exposed to the winter sun could benefit from wrapping essentially for their lifetime.

I hope this helps!

Cordially,

John
