Elderberry poisonous aspect #921187

Asked October 31, 2025, 3:43 PM EDT

Can I compost elderberry branches and use the compost in my vegetable bed? I heard that elderberries contain poisonous substances in their branches and leaves

Expert Response

Hi,
Leaves, stems, and fruits may contain toxic compounds known as cyanogenic glycosides. These compounds degrade during decomposition. The branches are safe to compost and the compost is safe to use in a vegetable garden.
