this growth is coming from a hole that has been in this very large tree for a long time. The orange growth came suddenly, it wasn’t there last week. The tree is too tall to get a better photo of it. The hole that it is growing out of is usually used by squirrels to winter in.

This looks like a fungal growth. The squirrels have probably moved out and there is plenty of moisture getting into hole.
It looks like this tree is near a walking path so you may want to have an arborist come out to look at it. Be sure to ask them if they are experienced in working with trees with fungal issues.
