Hi Sandra,
If you are talking about a Norway Pine (Pinus resinosa) you need to keep the root system insulated from cold winter temperatures. It sounds like it is currently in some type of container. If possible, you could bury the container in some soil so the root system is underground. The Norway Pine likes a cold winter so it does need to stay outside. You also might want to mulch with leaves or pine bark. If you use a wood mulch, don’t pile more than 3 inches on the tree. I’m assuming that this tree will not stay in a container very long because it will get way too big to survive in a container and needs to be in the ground. You also might want to keep it well watered because evergreens keep transpiring (losing water) through the needles in the fall and early spring. However, Norway pines don’t like to be in soggy soil so make sure it is well drained (container should have a drainage hole). If you are unable to bury the container, plant in as large of a container as possible so that the root system has at least a foot of soil around it to provide insulation. Here is a link to a couple publications about growing Norway Pine.

If you’re talking about the Norfolk Island Pine, that is a houseplant in Michigan and would need to come inside for the winter.
