When to wean rabbits #920374

Asked October 21, 2025, 1:27 PM EDT

We are trying to find out the most up-to-date science on when to wean rabbits. 8 weeks seems to be the accepted age that many current breeders adhere to, due to rabbit immune system development. It seems very reasonable and I would appreciate seeing something "official" that backs it up. Thank you!

Hello;

In the article, ARBA Recommendations for the Care of Rabbits and Cavies – ARBA, it is stated that kits may be weaned at 6-8 weeks of age with the maximum age to wean young at 10 weeks.  I have raised rabbits for over 50 years and have been using this rule of thumb with my own herd.

Please let me know if you have further questions.
