Asked October 08, 2025, 12:47 PM EDT

How deep do the roots of spruce trees grow? I don't want them to grow into my sewer line.

Kent County Michigan

Expert Response

Good Afternoon,
Spruce trees typically possess shallow, wide-spreading root systems, with the majority of roots found in the top 12 to 24 inches of soil. Michigan State University Extension states that for most trees, including spruces, approximately 80% of roots reside within the top 18–24 inches of soil.
