How to keep Mimosa pudica alive indoors #919260

Asked October 04, 2025, 8:16 PM EDT

At the Washington County fair, got a Mimosa pudica from the master gardeners. Looking at the care instructions attached it states that it is hard to keep alive all winter. (Once you bring it in as temperatures cool down.) It mentions putting it in front of a sunny window. Wondering what is the lack that makes them hard to keep alive? I do have grow lights for starting seeds, overwintering aloe and rosemary, and for keeping my venus fly traps alive. So I can give more hours of daylight than will get in window. Typically I have grow light on for 9 hours a day for my other stuff. So is it amount of light? Or is it because of dry indoor air, so need to spritz for some additional humidity? Something else?

Expert Response

The main challenges indoors for sensitive plants are insufficient light and low humidity.  They also require careful watering and temperature control to stay alive. Using grow lights for about 9 hours daily is helpful, but allowing for additional humidity and avoiding any cold drafts are also necessary.  You may have the proper conditions to overwinter this plan successfully indoors.  Avoid temperatures below 60 degrees and utilize a sunny window.  Good luck with your project.
