Galvanized metal raised beds are considered generally safe for food crops. Zinc is the primary metal used in the galvanization process. Very small amounts of zinc may be released through weathering and abrasion that would not be a risk for soil or human health. More zinc could be released if the soil pH is less than 6.0. Cadmium and may be present at very low levels as an impurity of zinc ore.

Plants would show symptoms if levels of these elements reached toxic levels. Check with the manufacturer for detailed information on the coating process and levels of impurities. Powder coating is a polymer coating considered non-toxic to both plants and humans.
