Watering grass seed #916749

Asked September 07, 2025, 4:11 PM EDT

I have had a large area hydroseeded. Two people have advised that I do not need to water as it is very dry with no dew, that I can allow the seed to stay dormant until rain comes for the first time. Do you agree?

Dear Marcy,

I am writing this note very quickly as it is crucial for you to water your newly applied seed. It doesn’t matter that the area was hydroseeded. It is still grass seed that needs water to germinate. The entire area should be lightly watered several times a day. Minimally, in the morning and the late afternoon /evening. Attached are two articles that describe successfully growing  lawns. In the Michigan State article, you can skim the parts about preparing the soil for seeds and skip straight number 11 irrigation/watering.  https://www.canr.msu.edu/resources/establishing_a_new_lawn_using_seed_e2910.  I include the Penn State article because it has the most information on hydroseeding. https://extension.psu.edu/lawn-establishment

I hope this is useful. Sabine
