Advice - Repotting large indoor plants #916079

Asked September 01, 2025, 1:27 PM EDT

I have four large plants in my home - in two cases over 50 years old :) and think that they need bigger pots. All except one (bamboo) are thriving, so I am not sure. They currently are in Peace Lily - had to choose three photos - no space for this one Ficus Benjamina ((15x15 pot) Dracaenia Fragrans (flowered for the first time this spring) (15x14 pot) Bamboo Palm - Chamaedorea seifrizii (15x15 pot) I need some advice on how to proceed. Thank you.

Expert Response

The usual recommendation for repotting a houseplant is to take it out of its current pot and place it in a new one that is 1-2 inches larger, adding fresh potting mix and then watering.  However, given the size of your plants, you may not want to do this.  Another option is to carefully remove the plant from its pot (get help if needed), cut or saw off the bottom and side inch or two of roots and repot the plant in its present container.  Add potting soil to the bottom and sides.  Then water regularly.  This will keep the plants from growing larger.  Good luck.
