Asked August 22, 2025, 8:38 AM EDT

Trees sprung up, not planted by humans, a few feet from the foundation of the house. Is there a problem here? Thanks

Hello Elizabeth,

Planting trees too close to a house is discouraged because roots and branches can cause structural damage to the foundation, plumbing and sewer systems. Overhanging branches can cause roof damage, blocked gutters and create points where pests can enter the house. Trees should be planted at least 15 to 20 feet from the house depending on the mature size of the tree.
