Sycamore tree question #912390

Asked August 02, 2025, 10:37 AM EDT

In my back yard I planted a 12 foot sycamore tree purchased thru my city's tree sale last September. It was healthy and fully leafed. This Spring it had lots of leaf buds which never emerged. The stems and branches are still soft and supple so I left it and still watered it. Within the last couple of weeks leaves have emerged from several areas on the trunk next to existing branches. They look healthy but I'm perplexed by this late growth and what to do with this tree. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the question. As a general rule, larger trees are less successful when transplanting. A 12 ft tree is quite large. Your tree is alive and will continue to grow. I believe it has dealing with transplant stress. It is putting energy/growth into establishing good roots. Do keep watering it for the first 2 - 3 years, which is very important. A couple of gallons every week that it doesn't get rain or when the soil dries out. The white tube is recommended for winter (Nov. - April) to protect the trunk, but should be removed during the growing season. The research shows that fungal diseases and decay can happen inside the tube.

As far as pruning; I would leave the branches for now and next early spring prune off any that are dead, including the upper portion of the central leader that is dead.

Placing wood chip mulch around the base but not up against the trunk is also recommended. This helps capture water, moderates soil temps, reduces evaporation, and protects against weed whacker or mower damage to the trunk.
