Why aren’t my marigolds blooming? #912308

Asked August 01, 2025, 1:49 PM EDT

I planted these marigolds from seed; lots of foliage but only one blossom. What’s the problem?

Expert Response

Thank you for reaching out.

Marigolds grown from direct seed planting in the ground always take longer to bloom.

There are several other reasons the marigolds aren’t flowering.  I don’t know if you fertilized, but one reason is too much nitrogen causing the plants to concentrate on growing, not flowering.  Marigolds don’t require much fertilizer at all.
Another reason could be the high heat we’ve had.  Some varieties don’t bloom in the heat.
Sunlight is a factor.  If they are in the full sun, no problem, but if not are they getting enough sun.

I’m sorry I can’t specifically give you one answer.  There are a lot of variables.  Be patient.  They will eventually bloom.

Thanks!  I suspect too little sunlight.  I just recently removed a volunteer sunflower that was way out of control size-wise.
