Every year at this time of the summer I have an abundance of spurge and clear weed in my perennials/hostas. How can I prevent their growth in the future? Does the product “Preen “… Work if put down in late spring.? What do you suggest to prevent this annual weed/past?

Expert Response

Preen works best when applied before the weed seeds have a chance to germinate, since it prevents root development after sprouting. Once those seeds break dormancy, Preen won’t do much for them—so getting ahead of the game is key.

Clearweed (Pilea pumila) is sneaky because it can reproduce quickly and build up a persistent seed bank in the soil. If any mature plants drop seeds, you're giving next season's weeds a head start. Pulling or cutting existing plants before they flower is critical.
