Tree of Heaven #909774

Asked July 14, 2025, 1:01 PM EDT

My back yard seems to be taken over by this darn tree. Can't find any real arborists around here. Have looked all over the internet and get varied responses how to get rid of them. Have a couple with 4-5" trunks and then a bunch of short ones all over. Have been pretty much disabled for a couple of years ,78yrs old, but better now. What is your opinion, please, on how to get rid of this misnamed tree -- how, when to cut, how to apply herbicides and which herbicides? I have spoken with the extension office here, and they couldn't tell me anything. Thank you very much.

Hello,

Sorry you didn’t find good information at your extension office.

This information is from an earlier question similar to yours:

“( Best practice is) removing the tree-of-heaven at least 30 days after fall application of herbicide. Cutting the tree alive in early spring and treating the stump is the second best option. Reserves are lowest in the tree at this time, so there will be reduced sprouting compared with cutting the tree in the summer. However, it will still result in considerable root sprouting that can be reduced by waiting until the fall and following your arborist’s recommendation. Either method may be used successfully, and both will require following up to control root and stump sprouting.
