Can I use the soil in my pots year after year ? #908446

Asked July 04, 2025, 3:37 PM EDT

I have several outdoor pots for annuals that I'm using with soil that hasn't been exchanged for years, except for the soil added along with new plants. Does soil wear out ? Thanks for your help !

Expert Response

It does have nutrients depleted as you water, so typically we recommend replacing about half of the mix with fresh potting mix or compost every year. You can also use either a slow-release fertilizer or water-soluble fertilizer on a regular watering schedule (according to label directions) to help with nutrients leaching out of the soil. For this year, since things are already planted, just water and fertilize regularly, and you can replace some of the potting mix when you plant next year.
