Spotted Lantern Fly #907786

Asked June 30, 2025, 7:45 AM EDT

I have discovered this bug in my yard, climbing up my trees. I understand I need to report this and also kill the bugs I see. Would you advise me where and to who I should report. And also let me know how to protect my trees. Thank you.

Lili,  I don't see a picture, but I'm assuming you have Spotted Lantern Flies in your garden.  The UME website will give instructions for reporting, but there is really no need.  They are everywhere.

They are not a danger to the home garden, just spray them off with a strong blast from your hose.  Do not use pesticides!  Predators - birds, other insects, etc. - will probably take care of most of them.

Thanks for contacting Ask Extension.
