fescue/clover and creeping thyme compatibility #907654
Asked June 28, 2025, 6:09 PM EDT
We are replacing our lawn with a lower moisture/low mow combination. We want to do half in a fescue clover mix and the other half in a creeping thyme. Are these two compatible next to each other? Do they need to be planted with a barrier between the two?

Expert Response
Creeping thyme doesn't compete well, so you may not need a barrier for it, but the others may mingle together. If you didn't want them to mix at all, you may want to consider some sort of barrier. Otherwise, they're fine together if they mingle together.

Here's a link to some information from Minnesota Extension about plants for this kind of lawn that would be applicable here in Colorado: Planting and Maintaining a Bee Lawn. (We're quite a bit drier, so our watering information would be different)
