Oak species identification #907652

Asked June 28, 2025, 5:32 PM EDT

Hi, the attached pictures are of an oak tree in Centennial CO that started on its own, assuming to be complements of a squirrel that forgot about his acorn. I am trying to identify what type of oak this is to determine if it is worthy of transplanting to a less crowded location and will grow tall to produce shade.

Arapahoe County Colorado

Expert Response

Hello. Using PlantNet Identity, this appears to be White Oak.

Here is a description of that oak from CSU:

https://cmg.extension.colostate.edu/volunteer-information/cmg-gardennotes-class-handouts/swamp-white-oak/

From CSU deciduous tree fact sheet, here is a summary:

Adapts to clay soils and irrigated lawns. Fall color usually yellow.

Attached is the fact sheet with more details regarding that tree and others (look in the chart section).
